& Personality

Éowyn is a noblewoman of Rohan, and at first is shown as a quiet and polite young lady. She is proper and soft-spoken, as one would expect from a maiden, however it is soon shown that more lies beneath the surface. Despite her gentle and lady-like manner, she is eloquent, and does not hesitate to speak her thoughts in the presence of men, showing right at the start that she understands the ways of politics and war, even if she lacks the experience that the others have.

She has lived so far a life of dimming opportunities. Having spent most of her life waiting on a king possessed by an evil power, she has lost on many chances that a woman of her age should have had by now - marriage and children, for instance - and until the curse is lifted from Théoden, there is truly no hope for her to find, and she is seeing her life wither into a path of decay. Yet she stands tall through it all and carries on her shoulders the weight of the throne itself, showing incredible strength of character, amazing will and genuine belief that her uncle will eventually return to her, even if at one point all seems lost.

She is a kind and compassionate person, who finds it in herself to care for all the people of Rohan, who, in return, respect her and hold her in the highest of regards, and she is truly a noblewoman loved by all. When Théoden must leave the city of Edoras to the care of someone else he chooses her, because he knows that she is the one that his people will trust most and listen to without question - as a matter of fact, as we know that Théoden was not himself for many years, it may be arguable that Éowyn is the one that people looked towards for any semblance of hope, strength and understanding.

Despite being of a quiet and polite nature, Éowyn is anything but passive. She is truthful and genuine, and is often shown to wear not only her emotions but also her opinions on her sleeve. Often times, during more emotional moments, she is quick to speak her mind, whether it is to share her opinion as to how some issues should be dealt with, but also confessing her deepest feelings, most notably towards Aragorn. Far from being too bold when it comes to such matters, she still makes it a point to subtly express her feelings, through soft words and small gestures, and when she is truly overcome by happiness she does not hold herself back from showing so through more open actions either. The same works just as well when it comes to negative feelings, as it is seen when she wears her emotion of loss and despair on her face when Aragorn rejects her and leaves the camp behind to go with Gimli and Legolas to summon the army of Dead.

She is extremely brave and completely fearless, and also quite stubborn and set in her ways, finding a way to take part in the war just like the knights of Rohan, despite everyone's efforts to try to keep her away from the battlefield. She is shown to be skilled with the sword even before the battle, when she is yielding a blade back at Edoras during one of her first appearances.

She is loyal and righteous, most of all towards her uncle and King, Théoden. She shows towards him endless affection, loving him much like she would a father, unwavering even through the dark years during which he was under Saruman's control. At the end she is willing to sacrifice herself for his sake, stepping in front of the Witch-King so that she can stop him from killing Théoden. She also respects her brother and loves him dearly, though it is clear that she has no qualms in opposing him whenever he expresses an opinion that she does not agree with. Despite being this way with Théoden as well, she is much more quiet and respectful towards the King, both because of his title but also because he is her uncle, whereas towards her brother she is more direct and assertive.

Having lived in a time of conflict, she is not at all naïve or ignorant about the reality of the world. She understands well the vicissitudes of life and war, and knows how much they all may still lose - their lands, and their lives. She at some point says to Aragorn that "the women of this country learned long ago, those without swords can still die upon them", and that she fears neither death nor pain, but actually finding herself locked in a cage and watching as all the opportunities for true valor and bravery pass her by. She shows here that more than a noblewoman or a lady, she is a fighter, a shieldmaiden. There is no wish left in her to be what is expected of a woman; she does not want to prepare meals and make beds for men. The one thing she truly yearns for, more than anything else, is to hold a sword and ride into battle, to fight amongst the men and to show her valor by going against their enemies, and to earn renown by her actions on the field of war that, to her, should not only be reserved to men.

She is, although discreetly, very stubborn and insistent on the things she believes in and wants to do, and when getting to a state of impatience, she becomes quite impulsive. Despite reasonable or not, she is obstinate and rather careless of her own safety, especially in face of her brother and her uncle's worries, because she sees in them no more than judgement of belief that since she is a woman she is of lesser worth. Which also brings up the fact that, at least to an extent, she seems to think the work that women usually do, like cooking or tending to the house, to be of lesser value, and that true valor can only be achieved in battle, through blood and sacrifice - and that real strength lies only in fighting and, if so, dying at the hands of one's enemy.

Perhaps because she has suffered so, and lost so much, she easily creates bonds with some people, and finds herself clinging far too easily to any glimmer of hope that anyone may offer her. Most notably, she develops strong feelings for Aragorn, despite hardly knowing him, and even being aware that his heart belongs to someone else. She shows to have difficulty dealing with his rejection as well, and her emotions are quite fluctuant in that case, going from joy and belief in a future for her, to finding herself in a state of despair and borderline depression that has her running into battle with no hesitation and no care for the fact that she may not return, showing a worrying ability to detach herself from her own existence in situations of true hopelessness.
